Located on the fringe of the Canberra City in the suburb
of Braddon, ‘Gatsby’ enjoys a unique setting on the tree
lined boulevard of Ainslie Avenue. Gatsby is built on the
site of one of Canberra’s earliest hotels within a precinct
of significant heritage listed homes and buildings.
Gatsby is a boutique development of 72 apartments
across two three storey buildings with a single level
basement. Critical to the projects appeal was a low
level design showing elements of early Canberra
architecture to ensure the project was in keeping with its
heritage surroundings.
After negotiating the project with a repeat client, PBS
Building undertook a full design and construct role.
The building has a load bearing brickwork and
Ultrafloor structure with large span timber roof
trusses to maximise
speed
of construction. All façade
elements were chosen to meet the stringent heritage
requirements including the recycling
of the roof tiles
from the original motel. The final product, whilst keeping with the heritage feel of the area, offers
buyers a modern alternative just five minutes walk from
the city.
