Situated on the fringe of Sydney city in a
revitalised, industrial area of Chippendale
is Metropole Apartments. The project
consists of eight boutique apartments
across five levels with mezzanine
bedroom suites for the penthouses
and a single level of basement parking.
Built between two street frontages
and with two equal height buildings on
either side, the project posed extensive
planning and building challenges
including underpinning of adjoining
buildings and shoring to the roadway.
The innovative use of hoardings and
portable cranes meant we were able
to address adjoining owners concerns
whilst maintaining a tight program.
The client’s vision for the project was
to achieve a renovated warehouse
appearance within a new building with
exceptionally high quality finishes.
This was achieved by use of a framed
concrete structure to maintain the open
feel, with the only walls within each
unit
built around the wet areas. Full height
joinery was built between all other rooms
to act as a divider and also
provide all
storage requirements.
All ceilings were left as off form concrete
which was given a ‘grain’ appearance
by the use of rough sawn timber on
our formwork decks. All floors were
travertine stone slabs with slab heating
and all fittings and appliances were
commercial grade European fixtures
to maintain the minimalist appearance.
The quality and individuality of the project
upon completion meant that discerning
buyers paid record prices for the
area for
all units.
