Completed in April 2010 the Eastern Precinct Development at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra is the most recent stage of the Memorial’s Site Development Plan.
The project included a new formal Memorial Courtyard and National Services Memorial, much improved and safer coach and car parking, and the replacement of the existing café with an accessible facility that will better reflect the significance of the site.
The National Services Memorial comprises of a bronze water feature set on a natural sandstone and black granite base and paved forecourt area.
The project also included a 200 space in-ground car park and construction and fitout of a new commercial café, with views down Anzac Parade to Parliament House. The War Memorial remained fully operational for the duration of the project.
The Eastern Precinct Development aims to reinforce and rejuvenate the character of the open natural landscape in
contrast to the more formal Western Precinct. The project will improve public access and safety, particularly for
groups arriving by coach and the mobility impaired.
